Indoor Floor Graphics: "How Long Will This Last?"

June 25th, 2019

There is no doubt that floor graphics is one of the fastest growing segments in digital printing. Clients are realizing that this is an effective way to promote a product, idea or event. There are several decisions that are required to produce a floor graphic decal that will adhere and remove properly and is appropriate for the surface.

For a given surface (wood, tile, sealed or rough concrete, carpet), Quality offers a solution that will meet a client’s requirements. It can be a direct print, slip resistant, textured adhesive film like DuraVinyl 187 or hi tack DuraVinyl Single Step or a longer lasting, two step floor graphic decal where you print on the appropriate DuraVinyl and laminate with a Quality floor graphic product. The trickiest part is controlling the client’s expectation for how long a floor graphic can last.

Floor graphic decals will pick up dirt, scratches, and scuff marks due to their slip resistant, textured surface which degrade the effectiveness of the graphic depending on the volume of foot traffic. Within weeks to a few months, the graphic will have to be replaced.  Regarding cleaning the floor graphic decal, because the direct print film or laminate is a vinyl or polypropylene base film,  you have to mop it with a mild soap and water since using a solvent cleaner will remove the ink on direct print materials or cause the laminate to get foggy. Buffing or power washing the graphic can also remove the ink or cause a failure with the adhesive.

The moral of the story is you have to control your client’s expectations regarding the longevity of their floor graphic. Floor graphics are an effective, temporary marketing tool designed to last up to a few months depending on foot traffic volume and then be replaced.
