    Demystifying Magnetic Receptive Material

Your client has decided they are interested in “that magnetic stuff that I can stick to the wall”.

You know there are products called “magnetic receptive media”, but you are not really sure how they work and differ from a magnet.

Most people know how a magnet works, you apply the magnet to a metal surface and it sticks but two magnets will not stick to each other. What makes magnetic receptive media different is, it is part of a magnetic system that includes a magnetic base and a printable media with embedded ferrous particles that will stick to the magnet.

Here is a brief description of the choices available with Magnetic Receptive Media.

  • Window Images Viewable from Both Sides

    September 8th, 2020

Window Images Viewable from Both Sides

A question often asked about window graphics is “what can I install that would be viewable from both sides and still let light in?

There are options for two-sided window graphics like Duravinyl 463, clear bubble free vinyl and Duravinyl 305, printable barrier film that look great both outdoor and indoor but do not allow light to filter in. Perforated window films like Continental panoRama Innova film looks great on the outside, but have a black back. This allows you to see through the holes when you are viewing from indoors, but also darkens the space during the day. Without direct spotlights on the graphic at night, your window branding and imaging is lost in the dark.

A printable vinyl film that is viewable from outside and inside is Continental panoRama TwoWay Vision film. This printable translucent vinyl is applied to the outside of the window, and when viewed from inside you see the reverse side of the image. The embedded white prism in the vinyl allows light to filter into the room. At night, the embedded prism technology transmits interior lighting, backlighting the image which makes your branding and imaging still viewable at night. The white prism technology also allows printers to print translucent window graphics without the need for white ink. This is ideal for retail showrooms, car dealerships and corporate decorating.

Interior Mount Perforated Window Films - How does that work and what are my choices?

Everyone is familiar with perforated window films- you see them on the outside windows of convenience stores, malls, even doctor’s offices. They add privacy, let in light, and advertise a product or service at the same time.

If a client prefers applying the perforated window film on the inside of the window (to prevent vandalism, extend the life of the graphic or to meet local codes that don’t allow graphics on the outside of the window), what options can you offer?

There are two options to manufacture interior mount window graphics. Which product you choose will depend on your printer type and your installation skills.

  • Applying Adhesive Vinyl to Plywood

    June 5th, 2019

    Applying Adhesive Vinyl to Plywood

As more and more retail clients realize the opportunity to promote a new store with graphics on an outdoor construction barricade or marquee, there is need for an adhesive vinyl that works successfully in this application.

Quality Media offers the perfect product to meet these demanding requirements.

DuraVinyl 435, Barricade Vinyl, was developed to adhere to the rough painted or unpainted plywood barricades used throughout New York.  DuraVinyl 435 is a traditional 3.5mil white vinyl with a 2mil coating of soft, high tack adhesive that tacks up to 9lbs/ sq in over 24 hours. Standard adhesive vinyl has a .8mil adhesive coating.

DuraVinyl 435 also offers the advantage that its adhesive remains stable during printing and will not squeeze out the sides when printing like other super high tack vinyl.

  • Removing Vinyl and Film Graphics From Windows

    May 3rd, 2019

Removing Vinyl and Film Graphics From Windows

You will find that the ease of removal will depend on several factors:

    Surface

Most adhesives stick very well to glass; however, cheaper grades of glass will often cause the adhesive to have a higher grip than a premium grade glass.

    Adhesive Strength

Did you use a media with a removable or ultra removable adhesive? For exterior window application, using a media with an ultra removable adhesive like Quality DuraVinyl 252 White or DuraVinyl 352 White 6mil vinyl, will make the removal much easier than a traditional removable vinyl.

    Time Frame

The longer the graphic is on the window, the stronger that adhesion. The adhesive often adheres better to the glass than it does to the vinyl over time.

    Sunlight

If the graphic is in direct sunlight, this will often cause the graphic to bond to the window and make removal more difficult.

With these factors in mind, lets look into tips for removing vinyl and film graphics from windows:

  • Resolving Silvering Issues With Facemount Adhesives

    May 9th, 2017

In the wide format digital print area, there is still a vibrant market for graphics displayed behind clear acrylic. These graphics are often referred to as “museum mounts” since this is a popular way to display artwork in galleries. These graphics are usually mounted behind a piece of “graphics” grade acrylic with a rigid backer and cleats to allow the finished product to be mounted on a wall.

The process involves using a laminator to apply a two sided optically clear adhesive film to a printed  image then adhering that image to the back of a “graphics” grade custom cut piece of acrylic. The next step is to apply a high tack two-sided adhesive to a rigid backer (typically PVC) and then marrying the acrylic/ print to the rigid backer through the laminator.  The last step involves adding “cleats” to the back of the graphic to apply it to a wall. When this process was initially introduced, the print media was a smooth photographic paper commonly referred to as a C print. As the resolution of digital prints (aqueous, uv, solvent and latex) improved, the market has shifted from photographic papers to these lower cost, lower maintenance options. Print producers can now be more price competitive in this art market where the margins are better than traditional digital output (banners, fleet graphics, yard signs). Once the print producer has mastered the process of mounting the print and backer, he or she will often face the issue of how to eliminate the “silvering” (tiny air bubbles) between the print and the acrylic. This silvering is most apparent in areas with dark images. Let’s look at the reasons this silvering may occur:

  • How to Choose the Proper Fabric for Latex Printers

    April 15th, 2016

How to Choose the Proper Fabric for Latex Printers

by Frank Corey, Senior Area Sales Representative

There is a growing trend in the wide format digital printing world towards soft fabric graphics. Fabrics can reduce the cost of shipping when compared with rigid media, allow store personnel to install the graphics with silicone edge graphics (SEG- just insert gasket in frame edge to install the graphic) and add a more sophisticated appearance to the graphic.

Although dye sublimation is still the dominant method for printing fabrics, recent advances in latex ink technology has put a spotlight on fabrics that print well with these latex inks. Fabrics that work well with latex inks include heavy and soft knit fabrics, comparable to dye sublimation fabrics. These fabrics have good image quality, have a durable surface when finishing (sewing- the ink will not scratch off), are waterfast and have a soft feel.

If you have made the investment in the new generation of latex printers and would like to consider printing on fabrics, here is a brief summary of factors to consider.

Seeing Double! How to Manufacture 2-Sided Window Graphics

Written by Frank Corey, Senior Area Sales Representative

One of the most common questions asked by wide format digital printers is, “how do I manufacture a double sided graphic for a window application?” Sometimes you see a small graphic applied to the outside of a door and a similar sign backing it up on the inside of the door. This works for small door signs, but how do you manufacture a larger double-sided sign that can be applied inside a window or door? How do you have back to back graphics without any light shining through to the second side?

    Creating Interior Window Graphics

Written by Frank Corey, Senior Area Sales Representative

Interior window graphics have gained popularity in the past few years for a number of reasons. Interior window graphics can be installed any time of the year, in a controlled environment, unlike outdoor graphics which require a minimum application temperature of at least 55 degrees. Interior graphics can typically be applied without any concern for zoning laws that often prohibit signage on outdoor windows. Interior graphic don’t have the chance for vandalism like exterior graphics experience. Lastly, interior graphics are much easier to apply on upper level windows as compared to getting a scaffold for upper level exterior window applications.

Make Sure Your Message Sticks! Tips on Applying Graphics to Walls

Written by Frank Corey, Mid Atlantic Area Sales Representative

A constant issue in the wide format, digital sign world is getting graphics to stick to painted walls. Failures typically occur when the top of the graphic releases and sometimes the entire graphic will be on the floor after one evening.

There are many factors that can cause these failures. The most obvious culprits are walls that are not cleaned properly (80% water, 20% isopropyl alcohol is typically recommended), walls that were just painted (paint can take up to 30 days to completely dry- no more outgassing), walls painted with new, low VOC paints, matte walls and walls with a lot of orange peel from numerous coats of paint.
